Special Education

Helen Keller School for the Visually Impaired

In 1960, Embrace the Middle East (then known as BibleLands) opened a vocational training centre for older blind girls in Jerusalem. It was originally named the Helen Keller House after Helen Keller. Now known as the Helen Keller School (HKS), it provides holistic education for visually impaired children.

Classes are small to allow teachers more time with each child. As well as all the usual curriculum subjects, the children learn Arabic Braille and skills that will help them to lead independent lives such as mobility training and daily living skills.When students reach the age of 12, they are encouraged to join mainstream school. They continue to receive support from HKS staff, who work closely with the student’s new school. HKS provides unique counselling services for students’ families, helping them to accept and cope with their child’s disability.

The Feuerstein Institute

The Feuerstein Institute is an international education, treatment and research center. Our mission is three-fold;

  • To develop programmatic and research based paradigms based on the Feuerstein Method, which teaches systematic thinking and learning skills.

  • To influence educational systems worldwide and assist them in better preparing their students to navigate the dynamic and ever-changing world.

  • To help children and adults from all backgrounds, religions and etiologies overcome cognitive, emotional, psychological and social disabilities and maximize their potential, with a view toward integration to the greatest possible extent.

We accomplish this goal through use of the Feuerstein Method, an unique educational system which uses mediation and specialized instruments in order to enhance learning potential. As a result, clients gain the knowledge and tools to reach beyond their manifest abilities and achieve even more than they have dreamed.

Jerusalem American International School

The Jerusalem American International School is a small, strong and diverse community where each individual is set up to excel in their own path of personal growth and academic excellence.
As a Secular American International school, we follow an American Common core curriculum, adapted with elements of the American Common Curriculum to enable is to give progressive instruction to our students joining us from other American schools and to also welcome in students who have experienced other educational systems.  All our learning is grounded in an inquiry approach, where we enable students to gain the necessary tools to steer their own learning journies, whilst giving them the solid foundation, inspiration, and rigor to thrive and excel. Our small class sizes allow teachers to give students individual attention to support their learning.

JAIS is situated in a quiet corner of Jerusalem on a beautiful and secure campus away from the busy construction in the city center. With excellent transport networks and a school vans service, students come to JAIS from all parts of the city.

Our community is enriched with students from 16 nationalities who speak 21 different languages. We are experienced at supporting these students as they adapt to English language schooling and accessing and enjoying a rich American curriculum. This enables them to leave JAIS to transition to any International or American school worldwide, as confident learners empowered by their experience of learning in the JAIS family.
